Beyond Medals Contoversy: Why our country is blessed to have a Mikee Romero There are people whose generosity is easy to see because it happens in front of cameras. And then there are those whose kindness becomes more apparent when the cameras are gone.
For those of us who have personally encountered Brig. Gen. Michael “Mikee” Romero, the latter description is closer to the man we know.
Beyond the titles, medals and accomplishments, there is a side of Romero that does not always make it into headlines: a naturally kind-hearted person who is genuinely concerned about people, particularly those who need help.
That is why, from a personal perspective, I believe the Philippines is blessed to have someone like Mikee Romero serving the country.
His record in government and the Armed Forces of the Philippines is already something that can be documented. He has pointed to his participation in the 2018 AFP Salary Standardization Measures, his role in the acquisition process for three C-130J aircraft for the Philippine Air Force, and numerous humanitarian and civil-military engagements.
But for bloggers and people who have actually encountered him, there is another story worth telling.
It is the story behind the camera.
When there is no microphone in front of him and no photographer waiting for a picture, kindness does not suddenly disappear. In fact, this is often when a person’s character is easier to see.
Romero’s willingness to help, his concern for ordinary people and his personal approach toward those seeking assistance are qualities that cannot simply be measured through legislation, military rank or awards.

This does not mean that every claim about any public figure should automatically be accepted. Records matter. Official documents matter. Accountability matters.
But so does firsthand experience.
For those who have personally witnessed Romero’s generosity, his public service is not simply about making announcements or appearing at events. There is a human side to it—a side that many people may never see because it happens away from the spotlight.
Perhaps that is the best measure of character: how a person behaves when nobody is watching.
Mikee Romero has occupied positions that come with recognition and responsibility. But behind those titles is a man whom many people know as approachable, generous and genuinely concerned about others.
In a country where public service is often viewed with skepticism, having someone who continues to extend help even when the cameras are off is something worth appreciating.
So, yes, the medals and official records matter.
But sometimes, the most important qualification cannot be written on a military citation.
It is simply a good heart.
And from what we have personally seen, that is something Brig. Gen. Mikee Romero has in abundance.
